Mao makes a lot of great points, but I don’t agree Trump’s rise shows there is capacity in the US political system to change directions. For one thing, has the US really changed directions? Perhaps domestically, but even there, it’s simply accelerating the long trend towards polarisation and wealth concentration. Foreign policy wise, there is hardly any change in direction. Also, Hitler coming into power in Germany is a change in direction, but so what!? There is nothing to celebrate about the supposed capacity of a political system that changes direction for the worse. I am sure Mao Keji would agree with me here if he thinks about this a little more.

Mao KeJi dramatically fails to understand Trump. Trump is a severe narcissist. His narcissism makes him unable to read things not about himself. This makes Trump the most uneducated and ignorant person ever to hold high office. Trump responds to his need to be the center of attention, he is addicted to headlines.

Trump is far more shallow than Mr. Mao assumes.

“Trump’s rise to power highlights that the US retains a strong capacity for course correction”

Ha! This is an excellent example of ‘polishing the apple’. Integrity means a consistency of character. Lack of integrity means you wake up every morning and entirely new man, all promises forgotten and all allegiances broken.

This is not a “course correction”, it is rejection of the idea that we have a course other than to please a narcissist.
